What a year it's been. Over the last 15 months or so, I've reconnected to Scouting in a big way.
It had been about 8 years since I've been involved in Scouting in any meaningful way. The 100th Anniversary of Scouting in the United States, along with my troop's (Troop 16, Scranton, PA) 95th anniversary, got me back into the program. Since then I've become Pack Trainer for Pack 16, sitting on our district Cub Scout training committee, and am webmaster for both my pack (www.pack16scranton.org) and our local council websites (www.nepabsa.org).
Yes, I said Cub Scouts. My 4 year old son can't wait to be a Cub Scout. He even got a taste of Cub Scouts this summer when he attended our Cub Scout Day Camp as a Pixie (tot lot) while I volunteered as a chaperone for the Scouts to attended from our Pack.
I've also connected with Scouter's from across the country. Thanks to the forum and podcasts at PTC Media (www.ptcmedia.net), I've met some terrific Scouters both online and in person, thanks to the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree. I've even started a small Council Shoulder Patch collection thanks to the CSPSwap on Twitter.
This year promises to be be even more exciting. Just some of the things coming up:
- Being the Lion Coordinator for our Pack (Lions is a pilot Kindergarten age program under Learning for Life, but implemented at the Pack level)
- Serving on our Council University of Scouting staff
- Wood Badge course in 2012, where some of our Cub Scout leaders currently plan on attending.
- Continue to expand the council website, adding services to our Scouts and leaders.
2011 - 2012 is going to be a great year for Scouting in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and around the country.
See you on the trail.
